How to use

  1. Enter the start and end time. AM/PM or 24-hour format both work.
  2. Add any unpaid lunch or break in minutes.
  3. Read the total in hours and minutes, and the decimal hours for payroll.
  4. Add an hourly rate if you want a gross pay figure.

Formula

worked minutes = (end - start) - break
if end is earlier than start, add 24 hours (overnight shift)
decimal hours = worked minutes / 60
gross pay = decimal hours × hourly rate

Worked examples

Day shift with lunch

9:00 AM to 5:30 PM with a 30 minute lunch is 8:00 worked, which is 8.00 decimal hours. At $20 per hour that is $160.00 before tax.

Overnight shift

10:00 PM to 6:15 AM with a 45 minute break is 7:30 worked, or 7.50 decimal hours.

Assumptions

  • A shift can be at most 24 hours. An end time earlier than the start is treated as the next day.
  • Break minutes are unpaid and are subtracted from the total.
  • Pay is gross, before taxes or deductions, and ignores overtime rules. Use the Time Card Calculator for a weekly total with overtime.

FAQ

How do I convert hours and minutes to decimal hours?

Divide the minutes by 60 and add them to the hours. 7 hours 45 minutes is 7 + 45/60 = 7.75 hours.

Does the calculator handle lunch breaks?

Yes. Enter the break length in minutes and it is subtracted from the time between start and end.

What if I work past midnight?

Enter the times as they appear on the clock. If the end time is earlier than the start time, the calculator counts it as an overnight shift.
