Formula

business days = calendar days - weekend days - weekday holidays

Worked examples

October 2026

October 1 to October 31, 2026 has 31 calendar days, 9 weekend days, and Columbus Day on Monday, October 12. That leaves 21 business days.

Adding days over Thanksgiving

3 business days after Wednesday, November 25, 2026 is Tuesday, December 1, 2026. Thanksgiving (November 26) and the weekend are skipped.

Holidays on a weekend

December 20 to December 31, 2027 has 8 business days. Christmas and New Year's Day fall on Saturdays, so they are observed on Friday, December 24 and Friday, December 31.

Assumptions

  • Holidays are the 11 US federal holidays: New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents' Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.
  • State holidays, bank closures, and company holidays are not included.
  • When counting between dates, both the start and end dates are counted. When adding days, counting starts the day after the start date.

How do I count business days between two dates?

Count every day in the range, then take away Saturdays, Sundays, and any holidays that fall on weekdays. The calculator does this for any range up to 100 years.

Is the start date counted?

When counting between two dates, both dates are counted. When adding business days, the start date is day zero, so 1 business day after a Monday is Tuesday.

Which holidays are skipped?

The 11 US federal holidays, using their observed dates. Uncheck the box to skip weekends only.

How many business days are in a year?

A year has about 260 or 261 weekdays. After the federal holidays that fall on weekdays, that usually leaves about 250.
