The US federal rule for most hourly workers is overtime after 40 hours a week.
Results appear as you type.
How to use
- Pick one week or two weeks. Two weeks adds a second table for a biweekly pay period.
- Enter a start time, end time, and break for each day you worked. Leave days off empty.
- Times can be 8:00 AM, 8am, or 24-hour 08:00.
- Check the total in hours and minutes and in decimal hours, then add your hourly rate to see pay with overtime.
Formula
daily minutes = (end - start) - break weekly hours = sum of daily minutes / 60 regular = min(weekly hours, overtime threshold) overtime = weekly hours - regular gross pay = regular × rate + overtime × rate × multiplier
Worked examples
Monday to Friday 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM with 30 minute lunches, plus Saturday 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM, is 46:30 for the week (46.50 hours). That is 40 regular hours and 6.50 overtime hours. At $18 per hour with 1.5× overtime, gross pay is $895.50.
7:45 AM to 4:15 PM with a 60 minute lunch is 7:30, or 7.50 hours.
Week 1 as above (46:30) plus week 2 at Monday to Friday 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM with 30 minute lunches (42:30) is 89:00 in total. Overtime is counted per week, so that is 80 regular hours and 9 overtime hours (6.5 plus 2.5). At $18 per hour with 1.5× overtime, gross pay is $1,683.00.
Assumptions
- Overtime is counted per week, not per day. Some states, such as California, also have daily overtime rules.
- Breaks are unpaid and subtracted from each day.
- Pay is gross, before taxes and deductions.
FAQ
How do I total a time card with lunch?
For each day, subtract the start time from the end time, then subtract the lunch minutes. Add the days together and divide the minutes by 60 for decimal hours.
How is overtime calculated?
Hours above the weekly threshold (40 by default) are paid at the multiplier (1.5 by default). Change either field if your employer uses different rules.
Can I leave some days blank?
Yes. Days with no start and end time are skipped.
How does overtime work on a two-week time card?
Under the US federal rule, overtime is counted for each workweek on its own, not across the two weeks. The calculator totals each week, applies the threshold to each, then adds them up.
