Material Calculators: Concrete, Gravel, Soil and Mulch

Ordering bulk material comes down to one number: volume. Measure the length, width, and depth, and each calculator below turns those into cubic yards, cubic feet, and cubic meters. Where it helps, it also gives bag counts or weight.

Pick the right calculator

Which one should I use?

  • Use the Cubic Yard Calculator when you only need a volume, for example to compare supplier prices.
  • Use the Concrete Calculator for slabs, footings, and post holes. It also counts 60 lb and 80 lb bags.
  • Use the Gravel Calculator when the supplier sells by the ton. It converts volume to weight with a density you can change.
  • Use the Soil and Mulch calculators for garden beds, where bags of 2 or 3 cubic feet are common.

Measuring tips

Measure depth in a few places and use the average, because ground is rarely flat. Split odd shapes into rectangles and add them up. Running short partway through a job is usually more trouble than a small leftover, so many people add a little extra. The Material Waste Calculator shows how much.
