Filling in a weekly time card with overtime
September 24, 2026
A time card adds up each day’s hours, subtracts lunch, and then splits the week into regular and overtime hours. The Time Card Calculator handles all seven days at once.
Steps
- For each day, write the start time, end time, and unpaid break.
- Daily hours are end minus start, minus the break.
- Add the days together for the weekly total.
- Hours above the overtime threshold are overtime. Under the US federal rule most hourly workers earn overtime after 40 hours in a week, at 1.5 times their rate.
Some states add daily overtime rules, and some employers use different thresholds, so the calculator lets you change both numbers.
Worked example
Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM with 30 minute lunches, is 8.5 hours a day, or 42.5 hours. Add a Saturday morning from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM and the week is 46.5 hours: 40 regular and 6.5 overtime. At $18 an hour, that is 40 × $18 plus 6.5 × $27, or $895.50 gross.
