How to use
- Choose US or metric units.
- Enter the length and width of each rectangular room or area. Feet and inches can be typed as 12' 6", 12 ft 6 in, or 12 6.
- Split L-shaped rooms into two rectangles and enter each one on its own row.
- Add a waste percentage and a price to estimate material cost.
Formula
each area = length × width 12 ft 6 in = 12 + 6/12 = 12.5 ft total = sum of all areas square yards = square feet / 9 square meters = square feet / 10.764 with waste = total × (1 + waste % / 100)
Worked examples
A 12' 6" × 10' room is 125 sq ft and an 8' × 6' 3" hallway is 50 sq ft, for 175 sq ft in total. That is 16.26 m² or 19.44 sq yd.
175 sq ft plus 10% waste is 192.5 sq ft. At $3.50 per sq ft, the material costs $673.75.
A 4 m × 3.5 m room is 14 m², which is 150.69 sq ft.
Assumptions
- Each row is a rectangle. Split odd shapes into rectangles and add them up.
- Inches must be under 12. Type 13 inches as 1' 1".
- Cost is for material only and uses the area including waste.
FAQ
How do I calculate square footage with feet and inches?
Turn the inches into a fraction of a foot by dividing by 12, then multiply length by width. 12' 6" × 10' is 12.5 × 10 = 125 sq ft.
How do I find the square footage of an L-shaped room?
Split it into two rectangles, work out each one, and add them together. Use one row per rectangle.
How many square feet are in a square yard?
There are 9 square feet in a square yard, because a yard is 3 feet on each side.
How much extra flooring should I buy?
Many installers add about 5 to 10% for cuts and mistakes, and more for diagonal patterns. Check the product instructions.
