How to use

  1. Enter room length and width in feet.
  2. Set how many square feet one box covers (from the product label).
  3. Add waste (10% typical; 15% for diagonals or complex rooms).

Formula

area = L × W
withWaste = area × (1 + waste%/100)
boxes = ceil(withWaste / boxCoverage)
cost = boxes × pricePerBox

Examples

Example 1

12×10 room = 120 sq ft; +10% waste = 132; at 20 sq ft/box → 7 boxes.

Example 2

Same room with 15% waste → 138 sq ft → 7 boxes still at 20 sq ft/box.

Assumptions

  • Rectangular room only; for L-shapes add areas first.
  • Waste percent covers cuts and defects. Irregular layouts need more.
  • Price is optional and uses your entered unit price.

FAQ

How much waste should I add?

Many DIY floors use about 10% waste. Complex rooms and diagonal layouts often need more.

How do I read coverage per box?

Use the square feet (or m²) printed on the box. Do not guess from plank count alone.

Does this handle stairs?

Measure stair tread area separately and add it to the room area before running the calculator.

Should I round boxes up?

Yes. You cannot buy a fraction of a box. The tool rounds up to whole boxes.
