Tile Calculator
Tile Calculator
Estimate how many tiles you need for a floor or wall, including grout gap and waste.
Results appear as you type.
How to use
- Enter the area to tile in feet.
- Enter tile size in inches and grout gap.
- Add waste for cuts (10% floors, 15%+ diagonals).
Formula
areaSqIn = (areaL×12) × (areaW×12) tilePitchL = tileL + grout tilePitchW = tileW + grout tiles = ceil(areaSqIn / (tilePitchL × tilePitchW) × (1 + waste%/100))
Examples
10×8 ft with 12×12 in tiles, 1/8 in grout, 10% waste ≈ 94 tiles.
Same area with 6×6 in tiles needs roughly four times as many.
Assumptions
- Grout is included in the pitch so layout spacing matches installed size.
- Does not model pattern layouts (herringbone) which need extra waste.
FAQ
How do I account for grout?
Enter grout width so the tool uses the tile's installed footprint, not just the tile face.
How much waste is typical?
About 10% for simple layouts. Diagonals and busy patterns often need 15% or more.
Should I round up boxes?
Yes. Buy whole boxes and keep a few spares for repairs.
Can I mix tile sizes?
Run the calculator once per size, then add the counts.
