Room Area and Square Footage Calculator
Room Area and Square Footage Calculator
Find floor area for rectangular, circular, or L-shaped rooms in square feet or square meters.
Results appear as you type.
How to use
- Pick a shape. For a rectangle enter length and width.
- For a circle, enter the radius in the length field.
- For an L-shape, enter both rectangular legs (outer extents).
Formula
rectangle: A = L × W circle: A = π × r² L-shape: A = L1×W1 + L2×W2 (non-overlapping legs)
Examples
12 × 10 ft rectangle = 120 sq ft (11.15 m²).
Radius 5 ft circle = π×25 ≈ 78.54 sq ft.
Assumptions
- Inputs are in feet; square meters are converted at 1 sq ft = 0.09290304 m².
- L-shape treats the two rectangles as non-overlapping additions.
- Does not subtract closets or built-ins.
FAQ
How do I do an L-shaped room?
Split it into two rectangles, compute each area, and add them. The L-shape mode helps when the tool offers it.
Is the result square feet or square metres?
It matches the unit system you enter. Keep length and width in the same unit.
Should I include closets?
Include them when the flooring or paint job covers them. Leave them out for a furniture-only layout.
How do I add waste for flooring?
Use the Flooring or Square Footage tools, which include a waste percent.
