Mulch Calculator
Mulch Calculator
Estimate mulch volume and bags for beds based on area and desired depth.
Results appear as you type.
How to use
- Enter dimensions or total square footage.
- Choose mulch depth (2-3 in is typical for beds).
- Match bag cubic feet from the label.
Formula
area = L × W (or given) volume_cu_ft = area × (depth_in / 12) bags = ceil(volume / bagCuFt)
Examples
20×5 ft at 3 in = 25 cu ft → 13 bags at 2 cu ft.
100 sq ft at 2 in = 16.67 cu ft.
Assumptions
- Does not subtract plant crowns or trunks.
- Bulk deliveries often sold by cubic yard (÷27).
FAQ
How deep should mulch be?
Most ornamental beds do well at 2 to 3 inches. Keep mulch off stems and trunks.
How do I convert to cubic yards?
Divide cubic feet by 27. Bulk deliveries are often priced by the yard.
Do I subtract the space taken by plants?
This tool does not subtract crowns or trunks. For sparse beds the difference is small; for dense shrubs, reduce area slightly.
What bag size should I enter?
Read the cubic feet on the bag label. Two cubic feet is common, but brands differ.
