How much gravel do I need?

September 24, 2026

Gravel is sold by the cubic yard or by the ton. Work out the volume from area and depth first, then convert to weight with the density your supplier gives. The Gravel Calculator shows both.

Volume

Area (sq ft) × depth (in) ÷ 12 gives cubic feet. Divide by 27 for cubic yards. A 10 × 10 ft area at 3 inches deep is 25 cu ft, or 0.93 cubic yards.

Weight

Multiply cubic yards by the stone’s density. 1.4 tons per cubic yard is a common planning figure, but size, type, and moisture change it, so ask your supplier and enter their number. At 1.4 tons per yard, 0.93 cubic yards is about 1.30 tons.

Driveway example

600 sq ft at 4 inches deep is 7.41 cubic yards. At 1.5 tons per yard, plan for about 11.11 tons.

Metric

Area (m²) × depth (cm) ÷ 100 gives cubic meters. 4 × 2.5 m at 5 cm is 0.5 m³, about 0.83 tonnes at 1.66 tonnes per m³.

The same volume method works for bark and compost in the Mulch Calculator and Soil Calculator.
