Results appear as you type.

How to use

  1. Enter your current grade in the class as a percent.
  2. Enter the overall grade you want.
  3. Enter how much the final exam counts toward the class grade.
  4. Read the score you need on the final, plus your best and worst case.

Formula

needed = (target - current × (1 - weight)) / weight
(weight as a decimal, so 25% = 0.25)

Worked examples

Within reach

Current 88%, target 90%, final worth 25%: you need 96% on the final. A perfect final gives 91%.

Out of reach

Current 85%, target 90%, final worth 20%: you would need 110%, so 90% is not possible without extra credit. A perfect final gives 88%.

Assumptions

  • Your current grade reflects everything except the final.
  • The final is a single weighted item. If your class drops scores or curves, the real result can differ.
  • Letter grade cutoffs vary by school, so the calculator works in percentages.

FAQ

How do I calculate what I need on my final?

Subtract your current grade times the share of the class that is not the final from your target, then divide by the final's weight. The calculator shows each figure.

What if I need more than 100%?

Then the target is out of reach with the final alone. The result also shows the highest grade you can still get.

What if the final is worth 50%?

Enter 50 as the weight. The more the final counts, the more it can move your grade in either direction.
