Results appear as you type.

How to use

  1. Enter bed length and width in feet.
  2. Enter fill depth in inches.
  3. Set bag size from the product label (often 1-2 cu ft).

Formula

volume_cu_ft = length × width × (depth_in / 12)
bags = ceil(volume_cu_ft / bagCuFt)

Examples

Example 1

8×4 ft bed at 6 in depth = 16 cu ft → 11 bags at 1.5 cu ft.

Example 2

4×2 ft at 12 in = 8 cu ft.

Assumptions

  • Rectangular footprint only.
  • Depth is compacted fill depth you want after settling.

FAQ

How much soil for an 8×4 ft bed at 6 in?

16 cubic feet, which is about 11 bags at 1.5 cu ft each (rounded up).

Should I buy bulk or bags?

Bulk by the yard is usually cheaper for large beds. Bags are easier for small planters.

Do I compact the volume?

Soil settles. Many gardeners order a little extra or refill after the first watering.

Is mulch included?

No. Mulch sits on top; use the Mulch calculator for that layer.
