Plant Spacing Calculator
Plant Spacing Calculator
Estimate how many plants fit in a bed or row given on-center spacing.
Results appear as you type.
How to use
- Choose grid or single row.
- Enter length (and width for grids) in feet.
- Enter recommended on-center spacing in inches.
Formula
count_along = floor((length_ft × 12) / spacing_in) grid total = count_along × count_across
Examples
10 ft row at 18 in spacing → 6 plants.
10×4 ft grid at 18 in → 6 × 2 = 12 plants.
Assumptions
- Does not leave an edge margin; many gardeners inset by half-spacing.
- Uses floor so plants are not crammed past the edge.
FAQ
How many plants in a 10 ft row at 18 in spacing?
Six plants: the first at 0 and then every 18 inches along 10 feet fits six positions with that spacing rule.
What is grid mode?
Grid mode uses row spacing and in-row spacing to fill a rectangular bed.
Should I measure on-center?
Yes. Spacing is usually on-center (stem to stem), not edge to edge of pots.
Does this include walkways?
No. Enter only the planted length or bed size.
