Image Storage Calculator
Image Storage Calculator
Estimate storage for photos from resolution, bit depth, and count.
Results update as you type.
How to use
Enter pixel width and height, bit depth, how many images, and an optional overhead factor. Read size per image and total storage.
Formula
bits per image = width × height × bitDepth bytes = bits ÷ 8 with overhead = bytes × overhead total = per-image size × count
Worked example
- 6000×4000 at 24-bit, 100 images, overhead 1 → about 72 MB each before compression.
Assumptions
- Figures are uncompressed raster size. JPEG and HEIC files are much smaller.
- Overhead of 1 means no extra container or preview padding.
FAQs
- Why is my JPEG much smaller?
- This tool estimates uncompressed size. Compression depends on content and quality settings.
- What bit depth should I use?
- 24 for typical RGB photos (8 bits per channel). Use 48 for 16-bit/channel RAW-style math.
- Does overhead include previews?
- Set overhead above 1 if you want a rough pad for sidecars or dual-format exports.
- How does this relate to print size?
- Storage cares about pixels and bit depth. Print size cares about pixels and DPI. Use Print Size for inches on paper.
