How to split a bill with tip

September 24, 2026

Work out the tip on the bill, add it to get the total, then divide by the number of people. The Tip Calculator does this and rounds each share up so the bill is always covered.

Worked example

An $86.40 dinner with an 18% tip: $86.40 × 0.18 = $15.55 tip, for a $101.95 total. Split four ways, each person pays $25.49. Rounding each share up to the cent collects $101.96, and the extra cent goes to the tip.

If everyone rounds up to a whole dollar, each person pays $26.00, the group collects $104.00, and the server gets an extra $2.05.

Tip before or after tax?

Both are common. To tip on the pre-tax amount, enter the tax from the receipt and tick the pre-tax box. A $54.00 bill with $4.00 tax, tipping 20% on the $50.00 food total, is a $10.00 tip and a $64.00 total.

Tipping customs differ by country and by type of service. For sale prices and coupons, see the Discount Calculator.
