Results appear as you type.
How to use
- Enter the original price.
- Choose percent off or dollar amount off, then enter the discount.
- Add an extra percent off if the deal stacks, and your local sales tax rate.
- Read the sale price, what you save, and the total you will pay.
Formula
sale price = price × (1 - discount / 100) with an extra discount: sale price × (1 - extra / 100) sales tax = sale price × tax rate / 100 total = sale price + sales tax
Worked examples
An $80 item at 25% off is $60.00, so you save $20.00. With 8.25% sales tax you pay $64.95.
$120 at 30% off plus an extra 10% is $75.60, a total of 37% off, not 40%. With 7% tax the total is $80.89.
$15 off $49.99 is $34.99.
Assumptions
- Sales tax is charged on the discounted price. That is how most US stores ring up a sale, but check local rules for coupons.
- Stacked discounts apply one after the other, not added together.
- Amounts are rounded to the cent.
FAQ
How do I calculate a discount?
Multiply the price by the percent off divided by 100 to get the savings, then subtract it from the price. 25% off $80 is $80 × 0.25 = $20 off, so $60.
Is 30% off plus 10% off the same as 40% off?
No. The second discount applies to the already reduced price, so 30% plus 10% works out to 37% off.
Do I pay tax on the original or the sale price?
Usually on the sale price after store discounts. Manufacturer coupons can be taxed differently depending on the state.
